Three Main Types of Dental Crowns

The decision to get a dental crown is one that should not be made lightly. Indeed, before getting your crown, you should first educate yourself as to the types of dental crowns and the advantages of each. Here at Belvedere Family Dentistry, we fabricate and install all three types of dental crowns.

Ceramic Crowns

Three Main Types of Dental CrownsCeramic crowns are made entirely from a porcelain composite. They are usually used in the front teeth due to the high visibility of this area. When properly fashioned and installed, ceramic crowns are able to blend in with your natural teeth, presenting an appearance of a natural and healthy smile.

Porcelain and Metal Crowns

Another common type of dental crown is one made of a metal base to which porcelain has been fused. It appears to be a natural tooth due to the porcelain covering, but it enjoys the strength and durability of metal underneath. While these crowns do appear much like natural teeth, it is sometimes possible to see the seam where metal and porcelain have been fused together. Because of this, these types of dental crowns are frequently used on the molars, canines, and most teeth besides the incisors.

Metal Alloy Crowns

Some crowns are made entirely of a metal alloy containing gold, copper, or various base metals. They are highly durable, strong, and resist damage better than any other type of crown. One characteristic of these dental crowns is that they can be affixed to a much smaller amount of a healthy tooth than other types of crowns. For this reason, they are a good choice when a tooth has suffered significant damage.
